Tezspire is a medicine that helps people aged 12 and older to manage their severe asthma. It is an add-on maintenance treatment which means that you use it with other asthma medicines to treat severe asthma when the disease isn't under control with these other medicines.
Tezspire works in a different way to your other asthma medicines which is why it may help to: reduce asthma attacks, improve your breathing and ease your asthma symptoms.
You may have heard your doctor call Tezspire 'tezepelumab' as this is the name of the active substance it contains. When triggered, your immune system makes special proteins called 'antibodies' to defend you against harmful substances, like a virus. Tezepelumab is a monoclonal antibody, which means it’s made in a lab, but it works in a similar way to our immune system's natural antibodies.
Tezspire specifically targets a substance called TSLP (thymic stromal lymphopoietin). Find out more about why TSLP is important below.
Tezspire targets a protein released by our immune system, called TSLP which plays a key role in causing inflammation in your airways leading to signs and symptoms of asthma. Tezspire blocks the action of TSLP, to help reduce inflammation and asthma symptoms.
The way Tezspire works*
Multiple external triggers, such as pollen, dust mite and cat dander cause the release of TSLP.
TSLP plays a role in causing inflammation in your airways that leads to signs and symptoms of asthma.
By blocking the action of TSLP, Tezspire helps to reduce inflammation and asthma symptoms.
*The exact mechanism by which Tezspire works has not been established.
Your doctor will have prescribed you Tezspire because your severe asthma was not under control even though you were taking other asthma medicines. Tezspire may help to: reduce asthma attacks, improve your breathing, and ease your asthma symptoms.
